Samuel J. King is an accomplished executive, consultant and faculty with unique combinations of healthcare finance, IT, project management, analytics, business intelligence, and continuous quality improvement. He has extensive background and broad experience in health plans, medical groups, hospitals, integrated delivery systems and consulting. He is a Managing Principal, King’s Consulting, and an Industry Fellow at the Center for Digital Transformation, The Paul Merage School of Business at UC Irvine. He is a faculty at The Paul Merage School of Business at UC Irvine, and the UCLA Jonathan and Karin Fielding School of Public Health.
He is a graduate of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) Bridge Program, which is designed to prepare high-level senior executives for a professionally qualified faculty position within an AACSB accredited business school, and enables the transfer of professional experience into teaching excellence. In addition, he attended graduate summer sessions in epidemiology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and Management Development Program at the University of Southern California. He has been a guest lecturer at UC Irvine’s School of Medicine, USC and other institutions
Mr. King has served in various management or consulting roles (Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, Director, Manager, and consultant, etc.) for many organizations, including Hawaii State Department of Health, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Southern California Permanente Medical Group, SCAN Health Plan, Physician Weblink, Deloitte & Touché, and Cogent Healthcare, etc. He has been a frequent speaker and moderator at various national and regional professional conferences.
He is a Fellow of Healthcare Financial Management Association (FHFMA), a Fellow of Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (FHIMSS), a Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS), a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ), and a Certified Healthcare Finance Professional (CHFP). He serves on the Boards of Directors of several professional organizations, including HFMA Southern California and HIMSS Southern California. He serves as the Immediate Past President (2012-13) and President (2011-12) of HIMSS Southern California Chapter. Under his presidency, the chapter received the HIMSS National Chapter of the Year Award (2011-2012) for innovation and outstanding performance. He serves on HFMA Southern California’s Executive Board as Vice President (2013-2014), Secretary (2012-13), and various committee chairs. He is a member of Health IT Summit Advisory Board. At UC Irvine, he serves as an executive mentor for the first year MBA students.
He has received numerous awards and scholarships from academic institutions and professional organizations, including the University of Southern California, the University of California, Irvine, the University of Hawaii at Manoa, the University of Michigan/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Government of Japan/Asian Development Bank, and Hiroki Kaku Memorial Scholarship. He received the prestigious HIMSS National Chapter Leader of the Year Award (2012), which recognizes an individual who demonstrates significant leadership, extraordinary contributions to HIMSS Chapters, the Society and a commitment to the HIT industry. He received the HFMA Southern California Chapter’s Board Appreciation Awards (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012), the Outstanding Committee Chair Awards (2009), and the President’s Awards (2012). He also received HFMA national William G. Follmer Bronze (2008), Robert H. Reeves Silver (2009), and Frederick T. Muncie Gold (2010) Merit Awards, as well as Helen M. Yerger Special Recognition Award (2010 and 2012).
At the national level, he serves on HFMA National Board of Examiners (2012-2015), as Chairman of HIMSS National Chapters Task Force (2012-2013), and on HIMSS National Davies Committee (2010-2014).
